Introduction to Interior Design: Types of Window Blinds

Most of us think that we know more things about blinds than what we really do.  It is just common that we treat almost anything we see in windows that can be adjusted to control the light coming in as blinds, and they are.  But there are actually different kinds of blinds that differ from one another in terms of size, orientation and material.  Here are some basic types of blinds to help us familiarize ourselves to them.

·      Venetian blinds.  Nowadays, it encompasses much of the window accessories that we have on stores.  Basically, this type has horizontal slats made of metal, PVC, composite or wood materials.  To control the lighting, slats can be tilted or be adjusted from the top of the window.

·       Mini blinds.  This is the same as that of the venetian blinds.  The difference lies on the width of the slats.  Typically, this kind has slats with width that range from 1/2” to 2”. 

·      Vertical blinds.As the name suggests, the slats of this type of blind is arranged vertically. They can actually be adjusted in such a way that sideways will be still mounted on top of the window like most of the types.

·       Roman blinds / shades.  This type is a popular favourite since they are usually made from fabric.  A cord is woven through the fabric that allows the adjustment of the blinds.  The open part is smooth while the top portion where the fabric is set is stacked evenly.

·       Pleated blinds.  It is like a roman shade but the open portion of the fabric is also pleated. It is known to be an insulator of heat especially during the warmer months.

·       Wooden blinds.  This type covers any blind that is made of wood.  Typically, the material used is bamboo and most often, the slats are horizontal.  Some of them can be folded like venetian blinds while others are rolled up.

·       Composite blinds.  This type of is usually made up of a combination of materials like wood and PVC, wood and metal, PVC and metal, etc. They are very versatile and can be used any season of the year.
